Jewellery Care

Buyers Guide > Jewellery Care

Diamonds are the hardest material on earth. They can only be cut, polished or scratched by other diamonds and are incredibly resistant to heat and pressure. However, a diamond may be chipped if it receives a very hard impact, especially to the setting that holds it. By having your diamond set properly and securely, and retaining an awareness that you are wearing it, you diamond can last a lifetime.

Many household chemicals and everyday environments such as chlorine and hairspray can build up residue on the surface of diamonds and dull their appearance. To keep a diamond looking its brightest it is recommended to clean diamonds regularly.

Cleaning Your Diamonds

To clean diamond jewellery yourself at home, you can make up a solution of one part ammonia and six parts water. Gentle scrubbing with a soft brush is usually all that is necessary to clean up a diamond of any dirt. Be careful not to scratch the metal of the stones setting.

Storing Your Diamonds

Diamond jewellery should be stored individually in soft cloth pouches or soft lined jewellery boxes when you are not wearing it. This is to prevent the diamonds scratching and dulling other jewellery.

It is recommended that you take a diamond to be cleaned and checked for stability of the setting about once a year.
